Getting a psychoeducational assessment in Scarborough is often about more than receiving test results. Parents want to know what happens next: how will the findings help their child during an ordinary school day?
That question is worth asking before you book. Find out whether the service includes a written report, a feedback appointment and recommendations that relate to the learning concerns you have described.
Use the feedback session to ask for plain language
When reviewing results, ask the assessor to explain the main findings without relying only on scores. Which strengths can your child build on? Which tasks are harder, and what does the assessor think contributes to that difficulty?
Bring your original questions back into the conversation. If writing homework was the concern, ask how the findings help explain that experience and which recommendations address it.
Before the appointment ends, identify anything you still do not understand. Ask how to raise further questions after you have had time to read the report.
Prepare for a focused school meeting
Ask the school who should attend a discussion about the findings. Agree with the assessor and school on how relevant information will be shared, with the appropriate consent.
Consider bringing three priorities rather than trying to resolve every recommendation at once:
- The learning task causing the most difficulty.
- A strength the school can use when planning support.
- One change you would like to discuss and review.
Ask which recommendations can be considered in the classroom, who will coordinate the next steps and when you will meet again.
Understand how a report relates to an IEP
An assessment report can inform school planning, but it does not automatically determine a particular placement or accommodation. Ontario explains that an Individual Education Plan is based on a student’s strengths and needs and may also be developed for students who have not been formally identified by an Identification, Placement and Review Committee. Ask the school how the findings will be considered in your child’s circumstances. Keep a brief record of agreed actions and questions that still need answers.
Discuss assessment options in Scarborough
Positive Kids lists an office near Ellesmere Road and Midland Avenue. Confirm with intake whether your child’s assessment can take place there and which professional would be responsible; office availability and assessment availability are separate questions.
Visit the psychoeducational assessment service page and contact Positive Kids to discuss your concerns. Ask about report contents and feedback from the outset so that the assessment conversation includes what your family hopes to do with the results.
