Psychologist, Psychotherapist or Counsellor in Vaughan: Where Should Parents Start?

When your child is struggling with big feelings, deciding whom to call can feel confusing. A search for a psychologist, psychotherapist or counsellor in Vaughan brings up overlapping descriptions. Start with two questions: what help does your child need, and what is this professional qualified to provide?

What is the difference between the three roles?

  • A psychologist is regulated by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO). Their work can include assessment, diagnosis and therapy within their authorized practice. CPBAO practice standards
  • A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is registered with CRPO and provides psychotherapy. Other authorized regulated professionals can also practise psychotherapy. CRPO public guidance
  • Counsellor is a broader description. Ask for the person’s full professional designation: someone offering counselling may also be an RP, psychologist or registered social worker. The service label alone does not establish their registration.

These are not three levels on a ladder. A professional’s experience with children, the service you need and the working relationship all matter.

Begin with an everyday example

Before contacting a Vaughan provider, write down one situation you hope will improve. Perhaps leaving for school ends in tears, or disagreements last through the evening. Describe what happens, how often and what you have already tried.

Ask whether the provider recommends therapy, parent involvement, an assessment or another service. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or decide the clinical plan yourself.

If you need formal diagnostic clarification, say so at intake. An RP’s registration alone does not authorize communicating a diagnosis. CRPO professional practice manual

Questions for the first conversation

  • Do you work with children of this age and with concerns like ours?
  • What would the first few appointments involve?
  • How would parents participate, and how would progress be discussed?
  • Where would appointments take place, and what are the fees?

For travel planning, confirm the actual appointment address rather than relying on a city name in a search result. Ask about scheduling around school and whether the proposed format suits your child.
