Psychologist, Psychotherapist or Counsellor in Toronto: How to Check Credentials

Searching for a psychologist, psychotherapist or counsellor in Toronto can leave parents reading a long list of letters after people’s names. Those letters deserve a closer look, but you do not need to become an expert in every training program to ask useful questions.

Understand the professional title

Psychologists are regulated by CPBAO. Assessment, diagnosis and therapy can fall within their authorized work; the service offered depends on the individual professional. CPBAO standards

Registered Psychotherapist, abbreviated RP, identifies CRPO registration. Psychotherapy may also be provided by other authorized professions. CRPO information for the public

Counsellor does not tell you the person’s entire professional status. Check for an accompanying regulated designation and ask which organization oversees their practice. A course certificate, degree and regulatory registration are different pieces of information.

Check the person who will see your child

Ask for the clinician’s full name and professional designation. For a psychologist or psychological associate, use CPBAO’s provider information and register. For an RP, start with the public register linked from CRPO’s website.

Read the current registration details rather than relying only on a clinic biography. If a designation includes “Qualifying,” ask what that means for supervision and your appointments. CRPO requires qualifying registrants to identify that status. CRPO professional practice standards

Registration is an important check, but it does not mean every clinician works with every age group or concern. Ask directly about child and adolescent experience.

Look beyond a long list of credentials

Describe your priorities: emotional support, formal assessment, parent sessions or help navigating a transition. Ask the provider to explain how their training relates to that need.

Consider bringing these questions:

  • Who will deliver the service, and will that person stay consistent?
  • What experience do you have with children at this developmental stage?
  • How will you explain your approach to my child?
  • When would you suggest a different provider or service?

For Toronto families comparing in-person and online care, also confirm the appointment location, privacy arrangements and whether the format is appropriate for the child.

Ask Positive Kids about the proposed clinician
