When school becomes difficult, families may be advised to find a psychologist, psychotherapist or counsellor in Scarborough. The most useful next question is what help the school or family hopes that professional will provide.
Is the concern about understanding learning needs, coping with distress, relationships or planning school supports? Different services may contribute to different parts of that picture.
How the three roles differ
Psychologists can provide assessment, diagnosis and therapy within their authorized practice. Ask specifically about experience with school-age children and the assessment needed. CPBAO standards
Registered Psychotherapists provide psychotherapy. RP registration alone does not authorize communicating a diagnosis, so a therapy service should not be mistaken for a diagnostic assessment. CRPO practice manual
Counsellor can refer to different roles. Ask whether the person is also a regulated professional. For a school-based counsellor, clarify their qualifications, responsibilities and available services rather than assuming the title means the same thing as a private clinic’s service.
Turn a broad concern into a clear question
Instead of saying only “school is not going well,” describe a few examples. Does your child struggle with written tasks, avoid particular situations or report friendship difficulties? Include your child’s account as well as the teacher’s observations.
Ask whether the provider’s proposed work addresses that question. A psychoeducational assessment may be discussed when the goal involves understanding learning strengths and needs. Therapy may focus on emotional or interpersonal concerns. The provider should explain the reason for the recommendation.
Discuss communication before sharing information
Ask what school information would be useful, how consent works and who would receive a report or update. Clarify whether school consultation is included and whether there are additional fees.
An external report can contribute to school planning, but it does not automatically determine a placement. Ontario’s IEP guidance describes planning around a student’s strengths and needs. Ontario individual education plans
At a school meeting, identify a manageable priority, who will follow up and when you will review the plan. Keep questions about clinical care and classroom implementation clear so each professional can explain their role.
