Parents comparing a psychologist, psychotherapist and counsellor in Mississauga often have two different goals: understanding why their child is struggling and finding support for everyday difficulties. Those goals can overlap, but an assessment appointment and a therapy appointment are not interchangeable.
Who provides which service?
A psychologist may assess, diagnose and provide treatment within their competence and authorization. Psychological associates are also regulated by CPBAO. Confirm the specific assessment offered. CPBAO standards
A Registered Psychotherapist provides psychotherapy; RP registration alone does not authorize communicating a diagnosis. A therapist can still explore concerns and plan therapy within their scope. CRPO practice manual
Counsellor describes a role or service rather than telling you the complete professional background. Ask whether the counsellor is also registered with a regulatory college and what services that registration permits.
Clarify what you want to understand
Suppose your child avoids reading homework and becomes upset when asked to start. You might want to understand learning skills, explore emotional distress or discuss family routines. Explain all three concerns instead of requesting a test simply because its name appeared online.
Ask the provider which questions their proposed service can answer. If you are exploring a psychoeducational assessment, clarify the responsible assessor, assessment purpose, written report and feedback process. Not every psychologist offers this type of assessment.
For ongoing therapy, ask what sessions would focus on and how goals would be reviewed. Therapy may involve conversations, activities or parent participation appropriate to the provider’s approach and your child’s circumstances.
Can assessment and counselling work together?
They may form different parts of a care plan. Ask whether existing reports would be useful, how information could be shared with consent and who would coordinate recommendations. Do not assume purchasing an assessment includes ongoing therapy.
Request separate explanations of fees, appointment frequency and any additional report or consultation costs. If someone recommends another professional, ask what question the referral is intended to address.
