Recognizing the Symptoms of ADHD for Children

The problem with ADHD for children is that it can affect their school and social life in significant ways. The diagnosis may come later in life, but the symptoms of the disorder may begin in early childhood. In order to be classified as ADHD, the symptoms must manifest to a degree that is inconsistent with the current developmental level of the child (he is more hyperactive or inattentive than peers of the same age).

ADHD is categorized as a neurodevelopmental disorder. To be diagnosed, the symptoms must be seen before age 12 (although there are cases where it is only diagnosed later on during adulthood). These symptoms are primarily characterized by inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity, or a combination of these. A child must show at least six symptoms from the categories below to be diagnosed.

Symptoms of Inattention in ADHD for Children

  • -Careless mistakes in school
  • -Cannot sustain attention during play or in tasks
  • -Doesn’t seem to listen when spoken to
  • -Cannot follow through on instructions, cannot finish chores or duties
  • -Has difficulty organizing activities
  • -Dislikes tasks that require mental effort
  • -Loses things required for tasks
  • -Easily distracted by external stimuli
  • -Forgetful in daily and routine activities

Symptoms of Hyperactivity in ADHD for Children

  • -Fidgets and squirms often
  • -Cannot remain seated at school
  • -Excessively runs or climbs when inappropriate
  • -Cannot engage in activities or play quietly
  • -Described as always “on the go”
  • -Talks excessively

Symptoms of Impulsivity in ADHD for Children

  • -Cannot wait their turn
  • -Blurts out answers before questions are finished
  • -Interrupts others

The child should show the symptoms for at least six months. Some of these should be present during childhood, at age 12 or younger. Another requirement for diagnosis is for the symptoms to exist in at least two different settings (at home or at school, for instance). The symptoms must create substantial impairment in the child’s academic functioning and social relationships.
